Tax regime

In-hand a month

—

What this assumes

  • FY 2026-27 rules under the Income-tax Act, 2025. Rules checked October 2026. An estimate, not tax advice.
  • You're a resident, salaried and under 60. The old regime uses the under-60 slabs; senior-citizen slabs aren't used, so the estimate may be off if you're 60 or older.
  • Under the labour codes, at least half your pay counts as wages for PF and gratuity, so we start Basic at 50%. Your company's split may differ — change it under More options.
  • PF is 12% of basic, on a wage capped at ₹25,000 a month (the EPF ceiling from 17 September 2026), used for the whole year, not prorated. Gratuity is 4.81% of basic (15/26 of a month's basic a year).
  • Monthly in-hand is shown excluding the tax attributable to variable pay; your payslip may deduct TDS on the full annual projection.
  • Professional tax depends on your state (capped at ₹2,500 a year). ESI, NPS, meal cards and other perks aren't included.
  • Other calculators may show a higher in-hand. Some don't take gratuity out of the CTC, leave PF out unless you add it, or tax the employer's PF as salary — we don't, because it isn't taxable. If gratuity isn't part of your CTC, switch it off under More options.

Questions

How is in-hand salary worked out from CTC?

Take the CTC, remove what your employer pays on your behalf (their PF and gratuity) to get gross salary. Then take out your own PF, professional tax and income tax. What’s left is your in-hand.

New or old tax regime — which is better?

For most salaries the new regime leaves more in hand: tax is nil up to ₹12 lakh of taxable income (₹12.75 lakh of salary, after the ₹75,000 standard deduction). The old regime can win if you claim large deductions such as HRA, 80C and home-loan interest. Pick “Old regime”, add your deductions, and compare.

Why is my in-hand so much lower than CTC ÷ 12?

CTC includes money you don’t get every month: employer PF (it goes to your PF account), gratuity (paid when you leave) and any bonus. Your own PF, professional tax and income tax are also taken out.

What changed with the new labour codes?

Since 21 November 2025, at least half of your pay counts as “wages” for PF and gratuity — if allowances go above 50%, the extra is added back. So many companies now set Basic at about 50% of pay, which can raise PF and gratuity and lower monthly in-hand a little.

Is PF still worked out on ₹15,000?

The EPF wage ceiling went up to ₹25,000 a month from 17 September 2026. Many companies take 12% of basic up to that ceiling (₹3,000 a month); some take 12% of the full basic. You can switch between the two under More options.
